Safety Verification Protocol

BS 7671 Electrical Inspection Checklist

Track verification milestones required for UK commercial and industrial electrical installations prior to formal Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) commissioning.

Preliminary Inspection Stage 0% Completed
1. Continuity of Protective Conductors (R1+R2) Low-resistance ohmmeter test verifying metallic continuity of all earth paths and main bonding conductors.
2. Insulation Resistance Testing (>1.0 MΩ) DC test voltage applied between live conductors and earth to prove dielectric insulation integrity.
3. Polarity Verification Across All Outlets Verification that single-pole switching devices, fuses, and circuit breakers are installed in the phase conductor only.
4. Earth Fault Loop Impedance (Zs) Within Limits Confirming measured circuit loop impedance does not exceed maximum values in BS 7671 for automatic disconnection.
5. RCD Disconnection Timing (<300ms / <40ms) Calibrated instrument testing at 1x and 5x rated residual operating current (IΔn) to verify fault tripping speed.
6. Surge Protection Devices (SPD) Condition Inspection of Type 1 and Type 2 SPD cartridge status indicators, short lead connections, and backup protection.

Frequently Answered Questions

Technical Guidance & Compliance FAQs

Common questions regarding BS 7671 certification, commercial electrical audits, and engineering resources.

Under BS 7671 guidance notes and the UK Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, standard commercial premises (offices, retail, warehouses) must receive an in-depth EICR inspection at least every 5 years or upon a change of tenancy. Industrial manufacturing facilities and sites exposed to moisture, vibration, or dust often require 3-year or annual targeted testing intervals.
Regulation 421.1.7 mandates AFDDs conforming to BS EN 62606 for single-phase AC final circuits supplying socket-outlets not exceeding 32A in higher-risk residential buildings (HRRBs), houses in multiple occupation (HMOs), purpose-built student accommodation, and care homes. In general commercial circuits, AFDDs are strongly recommended to detect dangerous series and parallel arcing.
For low-voltage public supply networks (230V single phase / 400V three phase), BS 7671 Appendix 4 specifies a maximum allowable voltage drop of 3% for lighting circuits (6.9V single phase) and 5% for all other electrical loads (11.5V single phase). Excessive voltage drop causes motor overheating, reduced luminaire luminous flux, and electronic equipment malfunction.
Our engineering guidance, design calculations, and technical articles are published for educational and reference purposes. All hands-on electrical and mechanical work, cabling terminations, and switchgear commissioning must be performed by certified, competent electrical engineers holding valid City & Guilds 2382/2391 qualifications or Scottish equivalent (SELECT/NICEIC).
